The image
A woman stands at the threshold of a convent, or passes through its door, about to take up a religious life. The picture holds the moment of entry: the outside world behind her, the enclosed community ahead. It is described here as an image of commitment. Marc Edmund Jones wrote the picture down in San Diego in 1925, as the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler described Capricorn 24.
Meaning

Entering a convent means giving up a great deal of choice in exchange for a single direction. We read the degree as the strength of a commitment that orders everything else around it. One way to see it is in a person who has found a vocation, a cause or a discipline and arranged their life to serve it. The image can also be read as withdrawal, a turning away from the world's noise to listen to something quieter. Both readings are possible; the Sabian tradition takes the picture as a description and does not say which a person lives out, or whether they live it out at all.
With Lynda Hill, one can look one step back for the background and one step on for the direction. The degree before is Capricorn 23, a pair of medals for courage, honour given by the world; here a woman steps away from the world's honours. The degree after is Capricorn 25, a dealer in hand-knotted rugs, where the inward life of the convent gives way to the long-made craft of others, gathered and shown.
The opposite degree, Cancer 24, serves as a reading aid: a woman with two male companions on a little sunlit plot that faces south. Both images show a woman in an enclosed space; one has chosen a community devoted to an inner life, the other a warm patch of ground shared with friends.

A planet or point anywhere from Capricorn 23°00′ up to, but not including, Capricorn 24°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Capricorn 23°29′ reads Capricorn 24, and so does one at Capricorn 23°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Capricorn 25 after Capricorn 23°59′, or back into Capricorn 23 before Capricorn 23°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
