The image
A large canoe lies at the water's edge, and a group is getting in, one after another, finding places and settling the boat. No one is paddling yet. The picture holds the minute before departure, when the load is being balanced and everyone has to trust the same hull. Jones took the picture down in San Diego in 1925 from Elsie Wheeler's description of the card for Capricorn 4.
Meaning

A canoe carries only as many as it can balance, and boarding one is a small lesson in cooperation: each person's weight changes the others' footing. We read the image as the point at which separate people become a crew. Before that point they can still turn back; after it they rise and fall together. One way to see the degree is in projects that depend on many hands, where most of the work happens before anyone leaves the shore: checking the load, agreeing on direction, finding a place for each person. The tradition reads it as a picture of readiness.
Read in Lynda Hill's way, the earlier neighbour is what this degree carries in with it, and the later one is what it reaches for. The degree before, Capricorn 3, is a soul open and ready to learn, so the voyage can be read as that openness finding a group to go with. The degree after, Capricorn 5, has men in a canoe rowing and dancing, the same vessel now underway and full of energy.
The opposite degree, Cancer 4, is a cat and a mouse in an argument, and it can be read beside this one as a reading aid. The canoe needs everyone working as one; the cat and the mouse show what happens to a partnership when the two sides are badly matched.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Capricorn 3°00′ up to, but not including, Capricorn 4°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Capricorn 3°09′ reads Capricorn 4, and so does one at Capricorn 3°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Capricorn 5 after Capricorn 3°59′, or back into Capricorn 3 before Capricorn 3°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
