The image
A long room with beds for children, and everywhere toys: on the blankets, on the floor, in small hands. What it shows is a room that someone has made lighter, where play has been brought into a place people do not choose to be. In 1925 the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler saw this picture for an unseen card, the one marked Capricorn 15.
Meaning
Our keyword is "Comfort in the ward", and our keynote speaks of care that turns a hard place into one of play. Both are ours.
The toys are the point of the image. Someone has thought about what a child needs beyond the necessary, and brought colour and games into an institution. We read the degree as practical kindness inside a structure: the rules and routines remain, and within them someone makes room for ordinary joy. One way to see it is in people who soften systems, who notice that a waiting room needs a box of books or a strict place a friendly word. The image can also be read as resilience, children who play wherever they are. The tradition takes such pictures as descriptions, and this page reads it only as a symbol of care, not as anything about bodies or treatment.
Lynda Hill places a degree in a short run of three, the first as its starting ground and the last as its next step. Before it comes Capricorn 14, old granite carved in low relief, the hard and the lasting; here the setting is just as institutional, but softened. After it comes Capricorn 16, girls and boys dressed for gym class, where the children are on their feet and moving together.
As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Cancer 15, people who have eaten too much and enjoyed every bite. Both pictures are about comfort; one is comfort brought in where it is needed, the other comfort taken to the full.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Capricorn 14°00′ up to, but not including, Capricorn 15°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Capricorn 14°56′ reads Capricorn 15, and so does one at Capricorn 14°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Capricorn 16 after Capricorn 14°59′, or back into Capricorn 14 before Capricorn 14°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
