Meaning
The centre cell collects every 5, and the school reads it as logic in a wide sense: reasoning, planning and the intuition that runs ahead of them. An empty cell is read as imagination outrunning planning; one 5 as enough logic for the short term; two as sound reasoning with good intuition; three as sharp insight that comes and goes; four as reasoning the school likens to seeing ahead; five or more as thinking that loops and cannot decide.
In our own words, the cell describes how a person reaches a decision: by feeling the way, by working it out, or by a hunch that arrives first. The school's talk of second sight at high counts is its own image; we do not say that anyone sees the future, and a low count does not mean that someone cannot plan.
Every count, in our words
The tradition's scale for a cell runs from none to overload. Our reading of each count of fives follows, with the share of dates that have it, over every day of the twentieth century and of the twenty-first.
- 0. Imagination ahead of planning; the person feels the way and does better with notes than with long plans. Dates: 40.7 percent of 1900 to 1999, 41.6 percent of 2000 to 2099.
- 1. Enough logic to avoid obvious mistakes and judge the short term; long plans are a stretch. Dates: 41.5 percent of 1900 to 1999, 40.3 percent of 2000 to 2099.
- 2. Good intuition and sound reasoning, enough to think ahead and to see through a bluff. Dates: 14.7 percent of 1900 to 1999, 14.8 percent of 2000 to 2099.
- 3. Sharp intuition that comes and goes: brilliant when it works, unreliable to lean on. Dates: 2.8 percent of 1900 to 1999, 2.9 percent of 2000 to 2099.
- 4. Reasoning so quick that causes and consequences seem visible before others see them. Dates: 0.3 percent of 1900 to 1999, 0.4 percent of 2000 to 2099.
- 5. Overthinking: every situation is analysed until nothing can be decided. Dates: under 0.1 percent of 1900 to 1999, 0.1 percent of 2000 to 2099.
- 6 or more. Overload: logic in loops, prone to fixed ideas. Dates: no date of 1900 to 1999, no date of 2000 to 2099.
How often the cell fills
Fives are as scarce as fours: 0.81 on average in both centuries, with 40.7 percent of twentieth-century dates and 41.6 percent of twenty-first-century dates leaving the centre empty. One 5 is the commonest count; three or more fall to about 3 in 100 dates.
Four lines through the centre
The centre is the only cell in four lines: the middle row (family), the middle column (money and everyday life), the falling diagonal (spirituality) and the rising diagonal (temperament). An empty centre therefore lowers four totals at once, and a full one raises them; the lines' pages show how often each falls in each band. The school teaches that two full cells can pass digits to the centre, 99 to 5, and that two 5s can pass to cell 9; that is its doctrine, and we compute no transitions.
What this page leaves out
Alexandrov's school teaches transitions that touch this cell (99 to 5 and 55 to 9); we record them as the school's doctrine and compute none of them. Nothing here compares two people's squares. Births from 2000 are read on the classic formula, with the "+19" variant as a labelled option.
Correspondences

- Logic (логика); the one-word English name is ours sourced
- What the count is read as
- reasoning and intuition sourced
- The bands
- none, weak, normal, strong but unstable, strong, maximal, overload, for 0 to 6 or more: the tradition's scale sourced
- Readings of each count (EsoTerrier)
- Written fresh in our own words; the Russian sites' readings repeat Alexandrov's books and are not translated our construction
- Western birth chart (Phillips, as summarised)
- The same digit in a grid of the date's digits only, drawn 3 6 9 / 2 5 8 / 1 4 7, with no working numbers sourced
- Transitions (Alexandrov school)
- 99 to 5 and 55 to 9: digits said to move between cells; the school's doctrine, not computed sourced
How the schools read it
- Alexandrov's school and the Russian tools
- Count the fives and read the count on the scale from none to overload; the cell is Logic.
- Afisha and a few others
- The same cell, drawn with 1 2 3 across the top instead of 1 4 7.
- Practitioners of "+19"
- For births from 2000, the third working number is the first plus 19, which changes the digits counted. A convention, offered by us only as a labelled option.
- Templeton and Phillips
- The Western birth chart counts only the date's digits and reads a line when its three cells are all full or all empty.
- EsoTerrier
- The cell describes how a person reaches a decision: by feeling the way, by working it out, or by a hunch that arrives first. The school's talk of second sight at high counts is its own image; we do not say that anyone sees the future, and a low count does not mean that someone cannot plan.
Claims about it
-
The meaning of cell 5 goes back to Pythagoras.
falseWhat the record shows: Pythagoras wrote nothing, and no early source mentions a square of birth-date digits. The cell and its name come from the Russian tradition that Alexandrov's school fixed, in print from 1999.
-
The nine cell names come from antiquity.
falseWhat the record shows: The names character, energy, interest, health, logic, labour, luck, duty and memory are the Russian tradition as Alexandrov's school fixed them; calculators print them without saying whose they are.
-
Digits move into and out of cell 5 by fixed transitions (99 to 5 and 55 to 9).
unverifiedWhat the record shows: A doctrine of Alexandrov's school, taught as a way of reading and strengthening the square, with nothing that tests it. We compute no transitions.
-
A full cell 5 shows a measurable gift of intuition.
falseWhat the record shows: No study of the square exists, and the one large test of birth dates against personality found nothing. "Second sight" is the school's image, not a finding.
-
The "+19" rule is Alexandrov's own correction for births from 2000.
falseWhat the record shows: His provision for this century, as his followers summarise it, concerns how the lines are read. "+19" is a practitioner convention, and we offer it only as a labelled option.
