The image
Someone sits with a paper held close, a newspaper, a letter or a document, and the line says that what he learns from it is hidden: not printed in so many words, but there for anyone who reads carefully enough. It gives no title, no room and no reason. The picture is of attention more than of discovery. A great deal can be found between the lines of an ordinary page by a patient reader who notices what is left out as well as what is said.
Meaning
The tradition reads degree images as symbols, and this reader is a symbol of insight through close attention. Our keyword is Hidden knowledge, and our keynote says that, reading closely, the mind finds what is not on the surface. Nothing magic happens in the picture. The knowledge was in the paper all along; it took a careful mind to see it. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a talent for analysis and for spotting patterns, gaps and hints that others miss, and as the habit of reading the world as one reads a text. It can also be read for its care: knowing what is hidden brings the question of what to do with it.
Read through Lynda Hill's rule, the neighbours give this degree a past and a next step. Its past is Virgo 28, a man with no hair on his head, plain force without ornament; its next step is Virgo 30, a worker too absorbed to notice a call that was not real, the last image of Virgo. By her rule the open, bare force gives way to quiet reading between the lines, and the close reader gives way to a worker so absorbed that a false alarm passes him by. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Pisces 29, shows a prism of cut glass: an instrument that splits plain light into its hidden colours, much as this reader splits a plain page into its hidden meanings.

A planet or point anywhere from Virgo 28°00′ up to, but not including, Virgo 29°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Virgo 28°34′ reads Virgo 29, and so does one at Virgo 28°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Virgo 30 after Virgo 28°59′, or back into Virgo 28 before Virgo 28°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
