The image
The picture is a single great ape. An orangutan, with long arms, shaggy red-brown hair and a thoughtful, almost human face, is shown on its own, without a forest, a cage or a keeper. The name comes from Malay words usually explained as person of the forest. Before October 2026 our own table carried the image of Pisces 16 at this degree, duplicating that degree's line, so the picture of Virgo 16 was missing from the product; this is the degree's own image.
Meaning
Read as the tradition reads its images, the orangutan is a symbol of the animal side of being human, met face to face. Our keyword is Meeting the primal, and our keynote says that behind every refinement stands the animal we came from. The ape is not a beast in the picture; it is a near relative, strong, intelligent, shy, at home in the trees in a way no person is. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a direct, earthy honesty that does not let polish hide instinct, and as a respect for the body and its needs. It can also be read as a reminder of kinship: seeing ourselves in an ape's eyes can be humbling and steadying at once.
Lynda Hill places the ape between the degree behind, read as background, and the degree ahead, read as heading. The background here is Virgo 15, a handkerchief made for show, refinement at its most delicate; the heading is Virgo 17, a volcano blowing out fire and ash. By her rule the finest of human objects gives way to the great ape, and from that meeting with our animal kin the next degree goes deeper still, to the earth's own force breaking through its crust. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Pisces 16, shows inspiration streaming in, whose keyword is Inspiration: the highest reach of the mind, beside this degree's reminder of the animal it grew from.

A planet or point anywhere from Virgo 15°00′ up to, but not including, Virgo 16°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Virgo 15°33′ reads Virgo 16, and so does one at Virgo 15°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Virgo 17 after Virgo 15°59′, or back into Virgo 15 before Virgo 15°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
