The image

The censer is a small metal vessel on chains; inside it charcoal burns and incense smoulders, and the boy swings it in slow arcs so that the smoke rises toward the altar or over the people. The line says only that he is a boy and that he swings the censer. In many churches this is the work of altar servers, children who learn the order of the service by helping in it, long before they could explain it. The smoke rises and fades, and the gesture is repeated through the rite.

Meaning

The tradition reads degree images as symbols, and the young server is read here for what his task stands for. Our keyword is Apprenticed service, and our keynote says that the young learn devotion by assisting in its ritual. The boy does not lead; he helps, and by helping he learns. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a readiness to learn by serving, to take a small, careful part in something larger and older than oneself, and as a respect for forms that are passed on by doing rather than by explaining. The picture can also be read for the beauty of an apprenticeship, when the meaning of the work arrives slowly through the hands.

For Lynda Hill the neighbouring degrees are part of the reading: the earlier one is the soil, the later one the reach. The soil here is Virgo 25, a flag lowered halfway down its pole, a community in mourning; the reach is Virgo 27, ladies of high society taking tea. By her rule public mourning gives way to the quiet service of a rite, and the boy's learned gestures give way to the learned manners of a drawing room, two kinds of form passed down. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Pisces 26, shows the new Moon's influence split in two directions: a beginning divided between two ways, beside this degree's single path of service, learned one swing at a time.

A planet or point anywhere from Virgo 25°00′ up to, but not including, Virgo 26°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Virgo 25°43′ reads Virgo 26, and so does one at Virgo 25°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Virgo 27 after Virgo 25°59′, or back into Virgo 25 before Virgo 25°00′. Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
