The image
The picture is an object on a table. A talking board, the printed board with the alphabet, numbers and yes and no, has a small pointer that sitters touch with their fingertips while it slides from letter to letter. The line gives no sitters and no question, only the board. In 1925 such boards were a popular parlour pastime and a serious practice for some. Our table before October 2026 showed, at this degree, a line from outside the Sabian set altogether; the talking board is the picture that belongs to Virgo 18.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, which is how the tradition reads every degree image, the board stands for the wish to hear from what cannot be seen. Our keyword is Reaching for hidden guidance, and our keynote says that a device is used to receive messages from what cannot be seen. The image describes a reaching, not an answer. Whether anything speaks through such a board is a question this page leaves alone; what the picture shows is people leaning in, hoping. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a curiosity about the unseen, an openness to intuition and to signs, and as the sensible question that should go with it: how much of what comes back is one's own hand on the pointer.
By Lynda Hill's rule the board is read between its background, one degree back, and its direction, one degree on. The background here is Virgo 17, a volcano blowing out fire and ash, hidden force breaking loose; the direction is Virgo 19, swimmers racing one another. By her rule the force from below gives way to a quiet reaching toward the hidden, and from the dim parlour the next degree moves out into the water, to bodies testing their strength against each other. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Pisces 18, shows an enormous tent, a gathering under one roof: the large, public meeting of many, beside this degree's small circle around a board.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Virgo 17°00′ up to, but not including, Virgo 18°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Virgo 17°47′ reads Virgo 18, and so does one at Virgo 17°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Virgo 19 after Virgo 17°59′, or back into Virgo 17 before Virgo 17°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.
- Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
