The image

Fine china, a silver pot, a tiered stand of small cakes, and around the table women in good dresses who know precisely how to hold a cup, when to pour and what may be said over tea: the line gives only the ladies, their high society and the tea. Afternoon tea in the 1920s was a ritual with rules, and its rules were learned at home. Before October 2026 our own table printed a different line at this degree, one that is not a Sabian image of any degree; this picture is the one that belongs here.

Meaning

Taken as a symbol, which is the tradition's way with every degree, the tea party stands for social form kept with care. Our keyword is Cultivated manners, and our keynote says that social form is kept with precision by those who inherited it. The manners are the subject, not the tea. They make a small world run smoothly, and they also keep outsiders out. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a fine sense of etiquette and occasion, a gift for making a gathering graceful, and as an awareness of how much is said through form alone. The image can also be read with a smile, as the art of saying very little very well, or with a question about who was never invited.

Taken after Lynda Hill, the degree just before shows what a placement starts from and the degree just after what it is moving toward. It starts from Virgo 26, a boy swinging incense in a censer, the forms of a rite learned by serving; it moves toward Virgo 28, a man with no hair on his head. By her rule the boy's learned ritual becomes the ladies' learned manners, and all that polish gives way to a figure who wears no ornament of any kind. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Pisces 27, shows the full moon of harvest time: plenty in the open fields, beside plenty arranged on a tea table indoors.

A planet or point anywhere from Virgo 26°00′ up to, but not including, Virgo 27°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Virgo 26°20′ reads Virgo 27, and so does one at Virgo 26°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Virgo 28 after Virgo 26°59′, or back into Virgo 26 before Virgo 26°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
