Meaning
The prime vertical is the great circle of the sky that runs through the east point, the zenith and the west point. Where it meets the ecliptic in the west is the Vertex; its opposite in the east is the Antivertex. Like the Ascendant it depends on the birth time and place, and it moves as quickly.
It is a modern point. L. Edward Johndro worked with what he called the electrical ascendant; Charles Jayne, testing it, found the point opposite more sensitive, and Johndro confirmed this before he died in November 1951. That point became the Vertex. Both men read it as showing matters beyond one's control, and later popular writing turned that into fated meetings. The reading is theirs, it has no older tradition, and nothing shows that it describes anyone. The first publication to name the Vertex has not been found.
Our fix of 2026
The formula for the Vertex can return the eastern point instead of the western one. Our own engine did so for many births near the equator until 11 October 2026: for about half of all birth times on the equator, and for none poleward of about 24°. The corrected engine keeps the Vertex west of the meridian, as the Ascendant is kept east of it, and other software with the same formula can show the same error for tropical births.
In our chart
Neither astro.com nor Astro-Seek draws the Vertex by default. We list it in the points table and draw it on the wheel, as Vx, with the points toggle; it takes no aspects. We call it a modern point wherever it appears, and our readings never treat it as a sign of a meeting or an event to come.
