Meaning
The meridian is the great circle through the north and south points and the zenith. Where it crosses the ecliptic above the horizon is the Midheaven, Medium Coeli or MC; the point opposite, below the horizon, is the IC, Imum Coeli. With the Ascendant and Descendant these are the four angles of the chart. Lilly in 1647 writes of the tenth house that "Its called the Medium Coeli, or Mid-heaven", and ranks it second in strength after the first.
Modern astrology reads the Midheaven as vocation, reputation and the public face of a life: what a person aims to be seen for.
The tenth house, or not
In quadrant house systems such as Placidus and Porphyry, the Midheaven is the cusp of the tenth house. In whole-sign houses the tenth house is simply the tenth sign from the rising sign, and the Midheaven degree falls somewhere inside the ninth, tenth or eleventh, further off at high latitudes; in equal houses the tenth cusp is 270° from the Ascendant and not the Midheaven at all. This is one of the commonest reasons two charts for the same birth differ, and why our chart lets you switch the house system.
Our reading
Since the engine audit of 14 October 2026 our chart gives one line for the Midheaven's sign, in our own words, and this page uses that line and no other. For the sample chart on our system page, with the Midheaven in Taurus, it reads: "A Taurus Midheaven tends to seek a public role that is steady, practical and tangible, valuing work that builds something of lasting worth." Our keywords for the tenth house, "vocation, reputation, public life", stand behind it.
In our chart
The Midheaven is drawn on the wheel's vertical axis and listed with the angles. It takes aspects from the ten planets at half their orbs and is never labelled applying or separating. In our validation it fell within 0.2 arc second of an independent computation.

There is one correct house system, and a planet's house is a fact of the sky.
disputedWhat the record shows: A planet's house depends on the division chosen: between Placidus and Whole Sign a median of twelve of sixteen objects changed house in our 56 test charts. We default to Placidus and show the system on the chart.
