Meaning
In Bailey's teaching the fifth ray is the energy of concrete knowledge. It observes, analyses and tests, and it is not satisfied until the facts are clear. She also calls it Lower Mind, by which she means the concrete mind that deals with particulars, as against the third ray's higher, abstract mind. It belongs to her rays of attribute and stands on the odd line with the first, third and seventh rays.
Under her rule for the bodies it is one of three rays that may govern the mind, with the first and fourth. The soul and the personality may be on it; the monad never is.
In our own words, it is the ray of exact knowledge: the person who wants evidence and is good at getting it, and whose risk is a narrowing into criticism and a refusal to credit anything that cannot be measured. No one's ray can be measured; a person's rays are theirs to confirm.
Her keynote for the ray is Action, and Liberation is the keynote she gives it for humanity now; the aspect of the will is the will to act. Its word of power is on page 518 of The Rays and the Initiations, cited and not quoted.
Bailey's three lists
In our paraphrase of Esoteric Psychology I (p. 207):
- Special virtues: strictly accurate statements, justice without mercy, perseverance, common sense, uprightness, independence and a keen intellect.
- Vices: harsh criticism, narrowness, arrogance, an unforgiving temper, lack of sympathy and reverence, and prejudice.
- Virtues to be acquired: reverence, devotion, sympathy, love and wide-mindedness.
Justice without mercy appears among the virtues, and the lack of sympathy among the vices: the list is honest about the ray's edge.
In a birth chart
Bailey's table sends the fifth ray through Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius. It is the only ray besides the seventh with a single planet: Venus, sacred in her scheme, with no non-sacred fifth-ray planet. Our old engine gave it Mercury as a second planet; that was wrong and has been corrected. Through Venus the ray reaches Taurus and Libra in her orthodox set, Gemini in her esoteric set and Capricorn in her hierarchical set.
A Sun in Aquarius or a strong Venus indicates fifth-ray energy acting on a person, by her tables. It does not tell anyone their own rays.
Bailey said the books that set out these tables were dictated to her by a Tibetan teacher; that is her account, and it is reported here as hers. Scholars have also criticised racist and antisemitic passages in her writings; nothing on this page draws on them.
