Meaning
The third ray closes Bailey's three rays of aspect. In her teaching it is the energy of active, adaptable intelligence: it plans, combines, weighs options and finds a way through a tangle. She also calls it Higher Mind and Adaptability, setting it beside the fifth ray, which she calls the lower or concrete mind. It stands on the odd line with the first, fifth and seventh rays.
Under her rule for the bodies it is one of the two rays that normally govern the physical body, with the seventh; and in her scheme the Earth itself is a third-ray planet. The soul and the personality may be on it, and it is the last of the three rays a monad can have.
In our own words, it is the ray of the resourceful, busy mind: quick to see connections and to make plans, and at risk of scattering itself, or of keeping busy for the sake of being busy. A person's rays are theirs to confirm.
Her keynote for the ray is Evolution, and Education is the keynote she gives it for humanity now; the aspect of the will is the will to evolve. Its word of power is on page 517 of The Rays and the Initiations, cited and not quoted.
Bailey's three lists
In our paraphrase of Esoteric Psychology I (p. 204):
- Special virtues: wide views on abstract questions, sincerity of purpose, a clear intellect, the capacity to concentrate on philosophical study, patience, caution, and freedom from worrying oneself or others over trifles.
- Vices: intellectual pride, coldness, isolation, inaccuracy in detail, absent-mindedness, obstinacy, selfishness and too much criticism of others.
- Virtues to be acquired: sympathy, tolerance, devotion, accuracy, energy and common sense.
Two words often attached to this ray online, scheming and manipulation, are not in this table. Bailey lists them among the ray's glamours, her word for its illusions of feeling, in a different book.
In a birth chart
Bailey's table sends the third ray through Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Her sacred third-ray planet is Saturn; her non-sacred one is the Earth, which has no place in a chart cast from the Earth, so our chart names it as a ruler without a position. Through its rulers the ray reaches Capricorn in her orthodox and esoteric sets, Libra in her hierarchical set, and, through the Earth, Sagittarius and Gemini. Our chart also shows Saturn in brackets beside Aquarius, as the traditional ruler; Bailey herself gives Uranus there.
A Sun in Libra or a strong Saturn indicates third-ray energy acting on a person, by her tables. It does not settle anyone's rays.
A note on the source: scholars have criticised racist and antisemitic passages in Bailey's writings; nothing on this page draws on them.
