A grove of trees long since turned to stone

The image

Logs or standing trunks lie on dry ground, and they are no longer wood: over a very long time minerals have replaced every fibre, so that the bark, the rings and the knots are now stone. The picture is of a petrified forest, life kept in perfect form after it ended.

Until October 2026 the degree carried, in our old table, a picture found at no degree of the Sabian set. That error is corrected.

Meaning

Our keyword is "Fossilised past", and our keynote: what once lived is preserved, unchanging, as a record. Both are ours.

Petrified wood keeps every detail of the tree, but it cannot grow. We read the degree as the double nature of memory: it preserves the past faithfully and it holds it still. One way to see it is in histories, archives and family stories that keep alive what would otherwise be lost, and in the patience of someone who studies them. The image can also be read for what it warns of, experience that has hardened so completely that it can no longer change. Both readings are open; the tradition reads a degree's picture as a description and leaves its emphasis to the rest of the chart and the person.

Hill's practice reads a degree's predecessor as background and its successor as direction. Before it comes Pisces 2, a squirrel keeping out of the hunters' sight, quick life protecting itself; here life has been fixed for ever. After it comes Pisces 4, a narrow neck of land crowded with traffic, where the still past gives way to busy present movement.

As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Virgo 3, a pair of angels come to guard. Both images are of keeping something safe; the angels guard what is living, the stone keeps what is gone, and the two can be read as protection and preservation.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Pisces 2°00′ up to, but not including, Pisces 3°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Pisces 2°32′ reads Pisces 3, and so does one at Pisces 2°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Pisces 4 after Pisces 2°59′, or back into Pisces 2 before Pisces 2°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Pisces 3 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Pisces 2, Pisces 4 and Virgo 3 beside it.

Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
