Chinese zodiac compatibility: two signs side by side
The Chinese signs are compared on the circle of twelve branches: whether two signs combine, share one of the four three-harmony frames or sit opposite, and how the two Day Masters stand in the Five Phases. The year changes at 立春, around 4 February, so a birth in January or early February takes the sign of the year before. Enter two birthdays to see yours; nothing is stored.
What the comparison looks for
- The same sign
- Two people born in years of the same branch share a sign, with the year counted from 立春.
- Six combinations (六合)
- Six pairs of branches the tradition binds together: 子丑, 寅亥, 卯戌, 辰酉, 巳申 and 午未.
- Three harmonies (三合)
- Four frames of three branches, four places apart on the circle: 申子辰 Water, 寅午戌 Fire, 巳酉丑 Metal and 亥卯未 Wood. Two signs in one frame are two of its three.
- Six clashes (六沖)
- Branches opposite each other on the circle of twelve, six places apart: 子午, 丑未, 寅申, 卯酉, 辰戌 and 巳亥.
- Six harms (六害)
- Six pairs the tradition names 害, harm: in each, one branch sits opposite the other's combination partner.
- Destructions (六破)
- Six pairs three places apart on the circle that the tradition names 破.
- Punishments (三刑, 自刑)
- The groups 寅巳申 and 丑戌未, the pair 子卯, and 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥 doubled, which the tradition names 刑.
- Day Masters
- The stem of each day pillar. Five pairs of stems bind (天干五合), and the two elements stand in the Five Phases: the same, one producing the other (生), or one controlling it (克).
Why there is no score
The tradition names relations between branches and stems; it gives no measure of a pair. A percentage or a rating would be our invention, so the comparison lists what the tables hold and leaves the reading of it to the two of you.
How it is found
The year from 立春 and the day pillar counted from a 甲子 day, as on the BaZi chart, read at noon where no birth time is given; the relations from the classical tables of combinations, harmonies, clashes, harms, destructions and punishments that the BaZi chart uses inside one chart. We show the relations the tables contain and give no score.
